Reports of iPhone security flaws are nothing new, but the latest batch of reports began earlier this week with the release of Jailbreakme 2.0, a new tool that lets you jailbreak your iPhone without connecting it to your computer.

Jailbreaking, which is the process of freeing your iPhone from Apple's software restrictions and potentially from AT&T's network, was ruled legal last week by the U.S. Copyright Office. a jailbroken iPhone can run apps that have not been approved by Apple, giving users more control over what they do with their smartphone. but once an iPhone is jailbroken, it may also be less stable, and by jailbreaking the device, you void any warranty you may have had.

Jailbreaking an iPhone can pose some risks to your device. I tried it once, on an older iPhone, and was left with a device that was bricked: it was unable to make or receive calls. Luckily, I was easily able to fix my iPhone by restoring it to its original settings via iTunes. but I haven't tried jailbreaking again.

while the latest reports of security flaws with the iPhone have centered around the new jailbreak tool, the security flaws themselves actually aren't with phones that have been jailbroken. instead, it is the way that Jailbreakme 2.0 accomplishes the jailbreak that has highlighted potential security problems with the iPhone.

In the past, jailbreaking your iPhone required connecting it to your computer and transferring the necessary software to the phone from your Mac or PC. but Jailbreakme 2.0 simply requires that you use the iPhone's Safari browser to visit its Web site, from which it downloads the hack necessary to jailbreak the device. my colleague Daniel Ionescu gave it a try, and was able to jailbreak his iPod Touch in less than a minute, no user interaction required.

Safari to Blame

and that, right there, is the security flaw that has experts so concerned: no user interaction required. as Gizmodo points out, the ease with which Jailbreakme 2.0 works highlights a serious security flaw within the iPhone's Safari browser:

"it just requires the user to visit a web address using Safari. The web site can automatically load a simple PDF document, which contains a font that hides a special program. When your iOS device tries to display the PDF file, that font causes something called stack overflow, a technical condition that allows the secret ninja code inside the font to gain complete control of your device.

"The result is that, without any user intervention whatsoever, that program can do whatever it wants inside your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. Anything you can imagine: Delete files, transmit files, install programs running on the background that can monitor your actions…anything can be done."

The problem lies with the way Apple's mobile version of Safari handles PDF documents, Sophos' Graham Cluley tells BBC News. The iPhone's Safari browser automatically opens PDF files, so a hacker could conceivably embed malicious code in such a document.

(Ironically, the BBC notes that the only way to prevent your iPhone from automatically opening PDFs is by jailbreaking the phone and installing an app called PDF Loading Warner, which will then ask for your permission whenever your iPhone attempts to open a PDF file.)

Sophos' Cluley notes that this security flaw, while serious, exists only on paper at this point, and has not been seen in the wild. an Apple representative told CNet that Apple is "aware of the reports and is investigating" the flaw.

Should you Worry?

Many reports surrounding this security flaw have made it sound like something that only those willing to jailbreak their iPhones need to worry about. but that is clearly not the case: this flaw could affect anyone who uses the iPhone's Safari browser.

it has yet to be exploited, but we all know there are plenty of hackers out there who would love to be the first to compromise Apple's iPhone. so, right now, I'm not terribly worried about the security of my iPhone. but I sure would like to see a fix from Apple … and soon.

Smartphone sales are poised for major growth over the next three months, with Apple and HTC on the upswing in consumer preferences and Motorola and RIM on the downswing, says a new survey by ChangeWave.

In a study that ended on June 28, 16.4% of respondents said they plan on buying a new smartphone over the next three months, the highest percentage on record since January of 2008, when ChangeWave first initiated its quarterly smartphone surveys. in contrast, only 10.8% said “yes” to that question on a ChangeWave study completed at the end of March.

iPhone and Android Will Keep DominatingAmong consumers who are about to make a purchase, a total of 52% answered “Apple” when asked, “Who is the manufacturer of the smart phone you plan of buying?”

On that question, Apple made a huge leap from the March survey, when only 31% of those planning to buy a smartphone had decided on an iPhone, Apple, by the way, started delivering its next generation iPhone 4 smartphone at the end of June.

Meanwhile, Android OS phones also continue to bear a major impact on the market, according to the report. “HTC (8%, up 2 points) [with] its new Droid Incredible and EVO models [is] the biggest beneficiary,” said ChangeWave analysts Jean Crumrine and Paul Carton, in a publicly available free summary of the study.

Conversely, however, Motorola, maker of the Android OS-based Droid and new Droid X, dropped 7 points, from 16% in March to only 9% in June.

Buying plans for RIM’s BlackBerry fell even further, from 14% in March to 6% in June.

For its part, Palm seems to have just about dropped off the map among prospective buyers, fading from a 3% score in March to 0% in June, also according to ChangeWave.

Samsung, LG, Sony-Ericsson Smartphones Not in the ChartYet not listed on the comparative chart for consumers’ smartphone buying plans are Samsung, LG, and Sony-Ericsson, all of which have introduced new Android OS phones in recent months. although some of these phones — like the Samsung Captivate and Vibrant — were unveiled after the close of the June study, others – such as the LG Ally and Sony Xperia X8 – had already been announced.

Samsung’s Galaxy S is set to be sold in different flavors by at least six US carriers. the Galaxy S-based Epic 4G will compete on Sprint’s Wireless Network directly against HTC’s evo 4G.

It ChangeWave’s report does highlight the Droid X, first announced on June 28. “The recent unveiling of [Motorola's] new Droid X device — featuring a 4.3-inch display, which the company believes is ideal for watching video (in contrast, the iPhone 4 only has a 3.5-inch display — suggests it’s determined to fight back to regain its Android leadership mantle,” wrote the two co-authors.

iPhone Owners the ‘most Satisfied’ChangeWave’s study also points to a correlation between customer satisfaction ratings and smartphone buying plans. in the study that closed at the end of June, Apple and HTC beat out Motorola, RIM, and all other cell phone makers in customer satisfaction, with 73% of current Apple iPhone users saying they were “very satisfied” with their phones and 39% of HTC phone users giving this response.

In comparison, the percentage of users “very satisfied” with their current phones amounted to 34% for Motorola, 34% for Palm, 31% for LG, and 30% for RIM.

Only 27% of current Samsung phone users said they were “very satisfied.” the same held true for merely 22% of Nokia phone uses and 20% of Sony-Ericsson phone users.

Do satisfaction Ratings Translate into Smartphone Sales?“Customer satisfaction among existing customers helps explain much of the momentum shift in the smartphone market,” according to the report summary.

It’s probably also worthwhile to point out, however, that the customer satisfaction ratings were performed across all cell phones. although Apple’s phone line-up that consists only of the iPhone smartphone, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and some of the other players ranked by respondents produce lower-end cell phones in addition to smartphones.

Consequently, it seems as though some owners of phones made by Apple competitors might have been voicing their satisfaction levels about feature phones, not smartphones, leading to an “Apple-to-oranges” comparison of customer satisfaction.

Also, if sales are indeed closely related to customer satisfaction, ChangeWave’s finding that zero percent of consumers plan to buy Palm phones over the next three months doesn’t seem to dovetail with the fact that Palm ranked higher than several other manufacturers on satisfaction.

Hewlett-Packard, however, unveiled plans to acquire Palm at the end of April, and HP hasn’t yet made any announcements about specific future smartphone products yet.

But to declare the race for e-paper dominance over is to forget just how widespread and diverse are the uses of dead-tree paper: every one of which represents an opportunity for e-paper manufactures.

Nemoptic, which has yet to partner with a hardware maker willing to put their displays into a proper e-reader, has managed to carve out a niche for itself by following this logic, and creating an e-paper display usable in place of those little tags on the front of grocery store shelves that tell you the prices of goods.

Apparently the ability to remotely update prices on store shelves from a centralized computer is labor-saving enough that retailers throughout Europe and Asia are jumping on the e-paper bandwagon.

Now Nemoptic is showing something new. It’s still the size of a shelf-front tag but, coming from a company that specializes in e-ink displays so cheap they are almost disposable, it shows some potential.

In a five-part demo just posted to YouTube and exclusive to Technology Review (as of this writing, none of these videos has more than a few dozen views) Nemoptic shows off its new black and white “bistable, nematic” e-paper technology.

This first video shows off the display’s relatively fast, 30 millisecond refresh, and a resolution sufficient to “render complex Chinese characters.” (Note the implicit focus on an extremely price-sensitive emerging market.)

In an intriguing development, this video shows the display’s ability to do a partial refresh–that is, to only refresh the part of the display that requires it. it could be both a performance-enhancing and a power-saving measure.

This clip shows off one use of the display’s high refresh rate–the ability to accommodate natural handwriting and note-taking.

Here’s something you won’t see on many other e-paper displays–passable (if a bit choppy) video.

And for Nemoptic’s final trick, they demonstrate that their display can be back-lit.

In its current format, Nemoptic’s display doesn’t appear to be anything to write home about in the resolution or contrast departments, but by relying on nematic technology–common to most LCD screens–it seems that the company has come up with a technology that is both versatile and, importantly, very cheap. for e-paper to become ubiquitous, it has to be disposable–just like the price tags on the front of store shelves.

So I am showering in sympathy for the Daily Mail, which was reportedly fooled into declaring that theiPhone 4 may be recalled.

TheNextWeb could scarcely trust its vision when it read in one of the U.K.’s more interesting newspapers that Steve Jobs himself had tweeted: “We may have to recall the new iPhone. This, I did not expect.”

Though the article has since been removed, TheNextWeb shows that the original headline was “Apple boss Steve Jobs reveals iPhone 4 may be recalled.”

The purported recall seems to have been something to do with the alleged antenna problem that seems to have particularly offended left-handed people.

It should be pointed out that, unlike some Twitter accounts, Twitter.com/ceoSteveJobs is remarkably clear that these might not be the words, thoughts and musings of Apple’s CEO.

It declares: “I don’t care what you think of me. You care what I think of you. of course this is a parody account.”

Indeed, it might have been something of a clue that on Saturday, he tweeted: “Oh, yeah, everyone’s been holding the mouse wrong too.” and on Friday, he offered: “People who live in houses shouldn’t throw glass phones.”

But perhaps the biggest clue might have been given by the number of followers this fake Steve enjoys. yes, a mere 101,829. if this was the real Twitter account of the real Steve Jobs, surely there might be a few more fanpersons than that.

To address the article… they didn’t talk about the 12 MP camera’s light sensor, about the display resolution… that’s the bad thing about apple, but they wont realize of this for the next 2 years at least, nokia already saw it, and that’s why they are way ahead. it just raises the price, and it’s not worth it, same with the storage, that’s why nokia droped from 32GB to 16GB, as you may know the n900 and the n97 one year ago, both included 32GB storage but that just raised the price, and just a small percentage of ppl really make use of it, so they switched it, they included 16GB and gave optional 32GB, lowering the phone cost but still giving 48GB of storage, that’s the type of smart thinking that’s keeping nokia way ahead of the competition, that’s why almost in every aspect the nokia cellphones will beat their rivals, even if they have better resolution screens (which by the way, there’s no whay LCD will beat OLED).

The speed.. people dont know anything about electronics,they see a large number(1.2 GHz) and they assume is better, but what they ignore is that the processor will get jammed processing all the graphics, and will lower the overall speed dramaticaly, while the N8 has a GPU(Graphical Processing Unit) dedicated only for the Video, leaving them with a full 680 Mhz speed exclusively for the processes.

Oh and about the Symbian, it has always been better, i have it, there’s no spec sheet out there that can tell you all the things i can do with my n79, is the best OS out there hands down, i wont even argue about it, but this new Symbian made from scratch, that also supports DLNA, VoIP, 1080P video playback among other features, we’ll be on top until Meego, and that’s IT.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company reported net profit of $3.7 billion, surging up 90 percent from $1.62 billion in the year-ago period. Apple posted revenue of $13.5 billion, up 49 percent from $9.8 billion in the year-ago period. The computer and smartphone maker’s gross margin was 41.7 percent, up from 39.9 percent in the year-ago quarter.

In January, Apple adopted new accounting standards that will allow it to claim revenues from iPhone sales when the units sell, rather than spacing revenues out over the lifespan of the device–24 months–as had been previously required. The firm said it is revising every quarter in its earnings since it began selling the original iPhone because it “believes retrospective adoption provides analysts and investors the most comparable and useful financial information and better reflects the underlying performance” of its business. The company reported $5.4 billion in revenue from sales of iPhones and related products and services in the quarter, an increase of 124 percent from the year-ago quarter.

Apple’s stock jumped around 6 percent, to around $260 per share, following the release of its quarterly financial results.

During the company’s quarterly conference call, Apple executives addressed a few hot-button issues. on a question about the performance of AT&T Mobility’s (NYSE: T) network, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said, “I think they continue to work very, very hard and we look forward to continued improvement. They clearly made big strides in some areas with some of the recent surveys have pointed out and I think it will continue,” according to a conference call transcript provided by SeekingAlpha.

As to whether Apple will expand distribution of its iPhone beyond AT&T, which to date has been the sole provider of the device in the United States, Apple’s Timothy Cook hedged: “Over the past year we have moved a number of markets from exclusive to non-exclusive. In each case as we have done that we have seen our unit growth accelerate and our market share improve. but that doesn’t mean we view that formula works in every single case. I would just sort of reiterate what I did last time that this is how we are learning so far. that is the result we have seen so far. We think very carefully about each of these at the country level to conclude what is in our best interest.”

Although Apple has expanded iPhone distribution from one carrier to several in a number of markets, including the United Kingdom, it continues to rely on exclusive arrangements with a single carrier in the United States, Germany and Spain.

Apple’s earnings announcement caps a particularly interesting week for the company. Apple has been embroiled in a blizzard of speculation during the past few days after photos surfaced of a device that the blog Gizmodo said is the next version of the company’s iPhone. Apple has requested that the device be returned.

Although Apple has not made any official announcement about the next iPhone, it is widely expected the company will unveil the latest version of the device in June, as it has done in the past. In a statement released touting the company’s earnings, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said only: “We have several more extraordinary products in the pipeline for this year.”

Adobe’s Flash Player 10.1 has been widely publicized as being the first version of the company’s runtime that will enable mobile devices to play most of the Flash content originally designed for playback within web browsers running on the PC desktop.

The new 10.1 version was initially targeted at Android and Palm’s webOS, with developer preview editions released over the last few months. Adobe has since committed to also supporting RIM’s Blackberry OS, Symbian, and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7, which is slated for release this winter.

The company originally intended to release Flash 10.1 in the second half of 2009 (as depicted in the timeline below), then the first half of 2010. The latest slip now makes the release a year late. despite its problems in delivering a real version of Flash for mobile devices, Adobe executives are seeking to pin the blame on Apple for not even wanting to wait for Adobe and its promised mobile Flash runtimes.

Engadget reports that Adobe’s chief executive Shantanu Narayen told Fox Business that Apple’s disinterest in bundling the upcoming Flash Player on the iPhone OS was a business rather then technology decision, and that it “hurts customers,” even though his company hasn’t ever shipped a full mobile version of Flash for any platform that actually works with the broad array of Flash content users might want to view.

There is no mobile version of Flash

Existing mobiles that say they run Flash really only support old versions of the runtime (such as Sony’s PlayStation Portable, which runs Flash 6 from 2002, or the legacy Palm OS, which runs a very old version of Flash 5 from a decade ago) or Adobe’s “Flash Lite,” a version that does not even aspire to playback the same content as desktop versions (it is based on Flash 8 from 2005). Symbian and Windows Mobile are limited to Flash Lite playback.

Adobe’s problems in delivering a real version of Flash for mobile platforms is complicated by the fact that most Flash content is not well suited to play on a small screen, and particularly not in a multitouch environment where desktop browser conventions of a mouse pointer and mouseover events are simply not present.

Flash is also hampered by the memory and processor limitations inherent in mobile devices. The upcoming 10.1 version of Flash for mobile devices will demand a fast Cortex A8 processor, which means it won’t run on anything but the highest-end Android, Palm, Blackberry, and Symbian phones sold over the last several months. Even if Apple wanted to bundle Flash 10.1, it would only minimally work on the iPhone 3GS and newer products.

In February, Apple’s chief executive Steve Jobs reportedly told executives from the Wall Street Journal that Flash was a CPU hog riddled with security holes and dismissed his interest in working with Adobe to fix Flash playback in saying, “we don’t spend a lot of energy on old technology.”

Adobe’s inability to ship Flash Player 10.1 on schedule means that the company’s current 0% share of the mobile market will continue through the second half of the year. The fact that more than half of the world’s mobile web traffic is originating on devices running Apple’s iPhone OS also means that Adobe won’t gain more than a minority share of the mobile market even once it actually ships its first functional version of Flash for mobiles.

This is in stark contrast to the 96% installed base Adobe claims for Flash on desktop PCs. with mobile devices becoming an increasingly important way for content creators and advertisers to reach people, the fact that they simply can’t currently do that using Flash is a serious problem for Adobe right now and into the near future.

Competition for Flash

Adobe also hopes to get Flash Player installed in tablet devices running Android and Chrome OS later this year in order to head off a similar issue with Apple’s iPad, which will similarly not run Flash. if Flash becomes the primary way to deliver dynamic content, games, and apps for Android, it will frustrate Google from being able to build a competitive native platform that can attract custom mobile development. It will also impede Google’s ability to push HTML5 as the preferred way to deliver applications on its upcoming Chrome OS.

In addition to facing competitive pressure from Apple’s App Store and its viable business model as a market for third party developer’s content and games, Adobe is also scrambling to make Flash competitive with the emerging HTML5, which enables web developers to deliver rich apps and multimedia playback without resorting to an external plugin.

Flash also faces threats from Microsoft’s Silverlight. While Silverlight is currently confined (like Flash) to the PC desktop as a web browser plugin, Microsoft hopes to rapidly push its Flash-alternative platform into its mobile devices, making Silverlight the primary way to create apps for Windows Phone and Zune.

Like Google, Microsoft is currently pushing Flash as a competitive feature checkbox, apparently in an effort to create the impression that Flash is important to browsing the web on mobile devices, and that Apple’s iPhone OS users are therefore missing out. once Microsoft delivers a mobile version of Silverlight, its commitment to Flash could evaporate quickly however.

Over the past week we’ve sampled analysts’ expectation for Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, Mac and iPod sales over the fiscal quarter that ended March 27.

Today we look at the bottom line — revenue and earnings per share — for what should be the company’s best second quarter ever, especially given how depressed the computer market was in the winter of 2009.

This exercise is simpler than in past quarters because Apple revised its accounting procedures in January to report most of its iPhone revenue as it is received, rather than spreading it out over 24 months. That effectively closed the distance between the GAAP and non-GAAP numbers that had caused so many analysts to underestimate Apple’s real performance over the past couple years. The Street’s consensus, as recorded by Thomson Financial, has Apple’s revenue and earnings up year over year 32.4% and 35.75%, respectively .

The most bullish estimate, submitted by Financial Alchemist’s Turley Muller, an independent with a enviable track record, has revenue up 41.7% and earnings up nearly 57% over the same period. (Even the most bearish, from think Equity’s Vijay Rakesh, has them up 23.3% and 7.8%, respectively.) See below.
