Local female directors applaud Kathryn Bigelow’s accomplishment

SACRAMENTO, CA- if you watched the Oscars, you may have witnessed a historical movie-making moment. Kathryn Bigelow of “the hurt Locker” became the first woman to ever win an Oscar for directing. Bigelow’s big win resonated with several local women directors.

Local stage and artistic director Peggy Shannon with the California Theatre Company was jumping for joy when she learned that Bigelow won the award for best director.

“It is one more step forward in just true equality of women who for many years doing the work that Katherine does in film and that I do on stage, directing, being the artistic vision for a film or a play,” said Shannon.

Local television director and filmmaker Sarah Pia Anderson talked with us via Skype from Los Angeles.

“I long for the day where I’m not talking about the female issue and direction. I’ve had career of 30 years. It’s always been an issue,” said Anderson.

Both local directors say the win for best director by a woman isn’t just breaking the glass ceiling, it’s paving the way for more female directors to come.

For her next project, Bigelow is directing “The Miraculous Year.” it is a story about a new York family told through the eyes of a self-destructive Broadway composer.
