Holiday highlight is US Capitol concert
By Walt Belcher, Tampa Tribune, Fla.
May 28–The Memorial Day weekend brings concerts, tributes and marathons to television, although not all of them are in memory of the fallen soldiers from past U.S. conflicts. TV Land, for example, has a “Bewitched” marathon on Monday while TLC has a “Cake Boss” marathon and the Food Network offers a “Grill It! with Bobby Flay” marathon.
Of course, the main event that captures the true meaning of the occasion is “The 2010 National Memorial Day Concert” from the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol. It airs at 8 p.m. Sunday on WEDU, Channel 3, and repeats at 8 p.m. Monday on WUSF, Channel 16.
Gary Sinise (”CSI: new York”) and Joe Mantegna (”Criminal Minds”) are co-hosts. Performers include Brad Paisley, Lionel Richie, classical singer Katherine Jenkins, Broadway’s Kelly O’Hara, gospel singer Yolanda Adams, several military bands and the National Symphony Orchestra. Gen. Colin Powell and actors Dennis Haysbert and Blythe Danner will participate.
This year, the concert honors military widows whose fallen spouses served in Iraq and Afghanistan, pays tribute to the 60th anniversary of the Korean War and remembers the more than 125,000 World War I and World War II troops buried in foreign lands.
AMC HEROES: Army Gen. David Petraeus joins the AMC network on Monday to comment between films during a “War Heroes” marathon of eight films: “Devil’s Brigade,” “The Enemy Below,” “To Hell and Back,” “The big Red one,” “Heartbreak Ridge,” “Courage under fire,” “Hamburger Hill” and “Wake Island.”
TCM & CLINT: Turner Classic Movies has a 72-hour Memorial Day weekend marathon that began at 6 a.m. today and runs through Sunday night. Included are “Stalag 17,” “The great Escape,” “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” “The Best Years of Our Lives” and “The Dirty Dozen.”
On Memorial Day itself, the network celebrates Clint Eastwood with a 24-hour marathon of his films — from the Italian westerns to his “Dirty Harry” flicks. At 10:30 p.m. Monday is the debut of “The Eastwood Factor,” a documentary about his life and career.
E! TURNS 20: the E! Entertainment network is celebrating its 20th birthday — on Tuesday — with special programs that begin tonight with “E! Celebrates 20 Years of the Celebrity Revolution” at 9 p.m. It’s a look back at pop-culture history since the 1990s.
This will be followed at 10 p.m. by “The Soup Presents: 20 years of Takin’ some E!” with host Joel McHale. the celebration also includes “Best of E!” weekend marathons of fan favorite E! series such as “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.”
WTSP EXPANDS: a new 5:30 p.m. “10 Connects” newscast begins June 7 on CBS affiliate WTSP, Channel 10. the station also is adding a reporter, Eric Glasser, a graduate of the University of Florida, who joins the 10 Connects team on Monday. Glasser most recently spent four years at WPTV-TV in West Palm Beach. Prior to that he was at KDFW-TV in Dallas and Fort Worth for 10 years.
WTSP used to have a 5:30 p.m. newscast, but it was bumped off in 2003 by the syndicated “Dr. Phil,” which WTSP aired from 5 to 6 p.m. “Dr. Phil” was more popular back then and served as a lead-in to the station’s 6 p.m. newscast.
the return of a 5:30 p.m. newscast will give WTSP local news from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
TUNE IN TONIGHT: On “Friday Night Lights” (8 p.m., NBC), the boosters go after Principal Tami Taylor (Connie Britton). Her husband, Eric (Kyle Chandler), learns about East Dillon High’s history at homecoming.
